Danish-American educators bought 9,000 acres of the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata in 1911 and called the place Solvang — sunny field. They came to found a folk school, not a wine region.
The Santa Ynez Valley did not receive its federal AVA designation until 1983, and most of the vineyards that now define it were planted after 1970.
